South Africa’s Favorites

The very first time I rode one of these mini-buses in the Cape, I was shocked. Fifth, is being close to a single mountain or tourist attraction essential, or will you be heading for the coast? There are some directed tours available too.

False Bay was given its name by explorers, who at first named it Table Bay. And they relabelled the original bay when they cruised around the other side of the mountain they found a bay far more deserving of this name. False Bay basically makes up the southern half of Cape Town’s suburban areas, and is one long stretch of sandy beaches that extends from Gordon’s Bay to Simon’s Town. Much of the upper end – Gordon’s Bay, Hair and the beaches along the Coastal Road – are lacking any significant attractions, however it is the lower end that runs along the train line that attracts the most visitors every year.

Among the most popular routes is the Skeleton Gorge/Nursery Ravine walk. It starts in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, at Smuts Track, and is suggested with small yellow tree tags. It wends its method through some native forest prior to hikers reach the half way point and some ladders. The ladders are there to help walkers over tricky rocky patches, but they are easy to climb up. The top deals views over False Bay and Cape Town Travel Point. From there hikers work their method past the Hely-Hutchinson Dam to the top of the Nursery Gorge where the descent starts. The entire circuit needs to take around 3 and a half hours.

We wished to go to Hermanus for 2 reasons. Most importantly to go visit my old and dear pal Michelle, and secondly for the Whale festival. The drive from Cape Town to Hermanus is beautiful. Picturesque views as you drive Sir Lowry’s mountain pass filled with flowers, then small farmhouses and the occasional shop where you can purchase a few of the fresh farm produce that you would never be able to get in the city. So we stopped at Auntie Millie’s Farm Stall. Understood for her fresh home prepared pies we obviously couldn’t resist stopping for a bite first. While being in the car savouring among Auntie Millie’s notorious pies, we were surrounded by the most breath-taking view around us.

The Coromandel is where New Zealanders go for a holiday. The beaches along the Coromandel are world well-known for being covered in pristine sand and enhanced by ideal surf waves. Warm Water Beach, on the east side of the peninsula, uses visitors a little additional: underneath the shore is a natural geothermal spring. If you visit a couple of hours on either side of low tide, you can dig a pit in the sand to reach the hot springs and fill your own, personal hot tub.

How do you reach this place? That’s the thing, it’s so near Cape Town Attractions Town – you can reach it by bus or automobile. No need for helicopter crash landings for this unique experience!

Day 3 – We head to laid back Hermanus for a whale of a great time. The yearly whale celebration is on led by the world’s just “Whale Crier” who blows his horn at each sighting. Whales collect here every September to mate. The clear bays are nurseries for mother and calves. There are about 5000 Southern Right Whales called centuries back as they were the right whales to hunt. They have no teeth and engulf to 400lbs of fish per day. My supplier stated we need to see thousands gathered here in safeguarded bays, but locals informed me they were shy today and just a few emerged. Nonetheless it was a great free day of celebrations. The entire Cape Town Hotels goes whale-gaga and we enjoyed joining the friendly residents.

Now I’m absolutely sure that all this suggests something if you a polar bear, and this is not to downplay their predicament, however I am not a polar bear and do take a trip periodically on long haul flights, therefore a little miffed at paying the extra additional charge for long haul flights when some short haul flights cost less than the beer long run passengers can’t pay for at the airport!

Almost all visitors leave South Africa with a happy, yet unfortunate appearance. Happy because they have had a good time, unfortunate in that there is a lot more to do, and such a great desire to miss the plane, leave the obligations they are going back to and begin life fresh in Africa. Decrease a bit, take things as they come. Anything is possible in Africa and there are a lot of opportunities!

Basing On Cape Point neglecting the ocean on a clear day is an extraordinary experience. They had flags revealing how lots of fish they had actually captured that day. After breakfast, Joe and I strolled down to Greenmarket Square.
