STORYLINE
African National Congress (ANC) members and fellow veterans of South Africa”s anti-apartheid struggle celebrated on Thursday the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela”s release from prison.
Thousands of people gathered at the former Victor Verster prison in Paarl, where the anti-apartheid leader was released from on 11 February, 1990 and, with his fist in the air, walked out to greet the expectant crowds.
Mandela was released after 27 years in prison, most of it spent on Cape Town”s Robben Island.
20 years on, South Africans are celebrating how far they have come since Mandela took his first steps to freedom.
Ahmed Kathrada, a former ANC activist who spent much of his time in prison with Mandela on Robben Island, said he “symbolised a collective.”
“We are proud, we are happy, on this day to remember what he and his colleagues did in leading South Africa to where it is today,” he added.
Julius Malema, President of ANC Youth League said that Mandela had “changed the character of the ANC.”
Mandela himself marked the anniversary of his release at home last week.
He was also expected to attend a re-enactment of his famous walk from Victor Verster.
Mandela, who turns 92 on July 18, had largely retired from public life.
In recent years, he tried to shift the focus from his own role, almost as if he worried South Africans were paying too little attention to building the future while looking back – whether to praise his achievements or measure current leaders against him.
